So far… 29th March 2018

Hello world!

It’s been a good March for us, we hope has been the same for you! The roof is 29243279_10214017376620132_1060387569_o-001almost finished, new planting beds have been created in Mandella designs and lots seeds have been sown. The 1.5 acres that’s still under conventional organic, rather than permaculture design, has been sown with a peanut crop to be harvested in May. The crop will to be sold on the local organic market, used to make oils and food pastes and utilised for the seasonal and local cuisines incorporated into the  community cafe menu.

March has been a month of rethinking. We are looking at the best ways to run an NGO with a constant influx of new people in relation to a delicate farm ecosystem. The big questions particularly evolve around how can we minimise soil disturbance and habitat destruction, whilst simultaneously enabling people to explore the farm. Another aspect we must consider is the interconnection of the various permaculture zones on the farm and how we can reduce the use of borders between areas too. Bit by bit, we are figuring it out.

Maybe a little video is the best way for you to see what we are up to…

The roof and the new crop beds are the biggest achievements of this month. As you can see from the photograph below, the walls of the house are still to be finished, but this is because we have been waiting until the roof is on to build the walls around the wooden frame.  The end nearest to us will be where the walls are built up, whilst the end furthest away will be left as a half wall for ventilation.
